map

The map is something I have been attempting to incorporate in or alongside my landscapes for sometime. An attempt at that can be seen in my previous post waxy colour. The map is a locater, a guide, the history of a journey and a place that exists beyond the aspect I represent. The pastels of the street directory have held great appeal since childhood and recently created a charming excuse to buy more embroidery threads.

Oh yes, the pastels of maps are something I’ve always been drawn to. I have a very large file of various maps I’ve collected, if ever you’d like to sift through them. I’ve always been fascinated with these kinds of representations of place. It is very sad to me that cartography has faded from the list of possible occupations. Maps are wonderfully textual, and I’d like to see your interpretation of them as textural.

I’m doing this on a fabric that is struggling to hold the bulk of my cotton thread, bulging and distorting areas. This makes me happy that I changed from the structured grid of the aida cloth I use for embroidered book covers. The distortions in shape transform the map I copy into a personal subjective topography.

I would be keen to rifle through your maps, I am increasingly interested in how people beyond myself relate to place and you seem an ideal subject to explore that with.
